This year the European newspapers of the year come from Portugal, Norway, Denmark and Scotland. A total of 219 newspapers from 27 countries participated in the 12th European Newspaper Award.

Due to the great differences in local newspapers, regional newspapers, national newspapers and weeklies, the main prizes are awarded in four categories. The following received awards at the 12th European Newspaper Award for best design and concept: local newspaper – Diário de Notícias da Madeira, Portugal, regional newspaper – Bergens Tidende, Norway, nationwide newspaper – Politiken, Kopenhagen, Denmark, weekly newspaper – Sunday Herald, Glasgow, Scotland.
