about

I am Vahur Kalmre – a journalist and a newspaper design consultant. I have been working as a journalist for 30 years in Postimees (the biggest newspaper of Estonia), as a newspaper designer I have been working for dozen years.

During this dozen years I have redesigned many newspapers in Estonia (always with my colleague Artur Kuus). For example Postimees, Tartu Postimees, Postimees-Extra, Pärnu Postimees, Sakala, Virumaa Teataja, Järva Teataja, Estonia (in Russian), Viru Prospekt, Põhjarannik (both in Russian and in Estonian), Valgamaalane, Eesti Spordileht, Pärnu Börs, Roheline värav etc. In 2007 me and Artur created a new design for the Lithuania’s biggest daily newspaper – Lietuvos rytas.

During my dozen years in design I have realized that people in Estonia talk too little about newspaper design all together. That is one the reasons why in 1999 me, Tiit Hennoste and Roosmarii Kurvits started out with a newspaper design contest, which still remains (although the form is decreased in time) to this day.

Throughout the years that I have been engaged with newspaper design, our layouts have won prizes in world and European newspaper design contests, let alone in Estonian contests. Also I have had the opportunity to judge in various European design competitions (Estonia, Russia, Finland, Poland, Central-Europe).

The main reason, why I started with this blog, is to talk more about newspaper design, not just right before and after the local contest, but all the time. That is why I hope that this (idea-exchange) site gives a chance to express different opinions and ideas about newspaper design for people all around the world (or at first, around Estonia).
